Myanmar National Human Rights Commission attends the Regional Workshop on Preserving Human Dignity by Preventing Torture and Ill-Treatment among ASEAN Member States

The Regional Workshop on Preserving Human Dignity by Preventing Torture and Ill-Treatment among ASEAN Member States was held in Bali, Indonesia from 11_12 August 2015. U Soe Phone Myint, a member of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission attended the said Workshop. U Thant Sin, Director from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Daw Aye Aye Moe, Deputy Director from the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security also attended the Workshop.
The Workshop was organized by the Representative of Indonesia to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, and AICHR representatives, relevant ASEAN sectoral bodies/ organs/ entities, representatives from government agencies of ASEAN Member States, experts from the European and African regions, the ASEAN Secretariat, representatives of National Human Rights Institutions from ASEAN Member States and Timor Leste, representatives of countries spearheading the Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI), representatives from Civil Society Organization from ASEAN Member States focus on torture and ill-treatment issue, representatives from Fiji who is in the process of ratifying UNCAT and become a friend of the CTI and Timor Leste, and regional and international organizations participated in the Workshop.
The Workshop aims to improve the understanding among ASEAN Member States on the preventive approach in reducing the risk of torture and other forms of ill-treatment, and to promote cooperation amongst ASEAN Member States with international partners on preventive approach. In the Workshop, discussions were made on the subjects such as encouragement for ratification of international human rights treaties among ASEAN Member States, with explanations and experiences of countries, among other discussions.

MNHRC met with Ms. Yanghee Lee, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar

Myanmar National Human Rights Commission met with Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Ms. Yanghee Lee at the Office of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission on 4 August 2015.

During the discussion, the Chairperson and Members of the MNHRC briefed the Commission’s activities on human rights promotion and education, human rights protection, complaint handling and cooperation with international human rights institutions.
